Objectives

  • Improving the participation of young people with intellectual disabilities in decision-making processes in order to strengthen the Self-Advocacy Movement in Latvia and promote the emergence of new groups under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
  • Strengthening the capacity of the Self-Advocacy Movement in Latvia through an in-depth study of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Activities

  • 2 Three-day seminars for young people with intellectual disabilities from Latvian social care centres;
  • 14 local seminars for Latvian Self-Advocacy Movement groups;
  • 9 seminars in Latvian special schools;
  • 10 meetings with representatives of  regional governments;
  • A two-day final seminar.

Expected Results:

  • To develop an easy to read document introducing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This document will be available in Latvian and Russian.
  • This project will give young people with intellectual Disabilities the opportunity to understand the UN Convention and contribute to its implementation in Latvia. Thus, they will be able to better express their opinion and defend their rights.
  • The Self-Advocacy Movement as a whole will also be strengthened and further cooperation at regional level will be encouraged.
  • Informal learning will be promoted in Latvia.
