Creating free-barrier cities
European Award for Accessible Cities
 |
People with disabilities sometimes find it difficult to live in the city
because many places and activities are not accessible to them.
Every year, the European Commission
Gives a price to accessible cities in Europe.
This prize is to promote accessibility for people with disabilities
in big cities.

Urban life provides a variety of opportunities and services for citizens. However, physical barriers still prevent many people with disabilities to fully participate in society and enjoy the benefits of living in the city. Therefore, the European Award for Accessible Cities recognizes local governments efforts to create accessible urban spaces and make day-to-day life easier for people with disabilities. A second award will be given to networks of cities or organisations that have been outstanding during 2011 in championing accessibility in the urban environment.

Un-accessibility in cities is partially due to the lack of sensibilisation on disability issues. The right of people with disabilities to take part in social life is not seen as a priority in many urban areas. Cities are a perfect environment to provide accessible services for people with disabilities and help them being independent, but the provision of these services is oriented to cover general needs for a high number of inhabitants and too often does not take into account the specific demands of minority groups.
Supported by the European Commission, the City Award promotes good practices on accessibility. Avila, in Spain, was the first city to get the accessibility award last year. Its medieval walls are definitely not a barrier for people with disabilities. The Commission praised Avila’s plan, developed since 2002, to improve accessibility to public buildings and to give incentives for private initiatives. It has also developed accessible tourism facilities and improved job opportunities for people with disabilities.
The launch of the award was based on a proposal by the European Disability Forum of which Inclusion Europe is a member. The disability movement supports this initiative and contributes every year in the selection of the successful cities at national and European level.
Cities with at least 50,000 inhabitants can submit their nomination until 30 September. More information is available on the Access City Award website. Getting involved in the promotion of accessible practices is a way to help people with disabilities stepping into the community.
